Nyssa’s Story

Chapter 1

I was running late to a meeting with my handler. I opened the and nearly ran into Victor, my ex-brother-in-law. “What on earth are you doing here?”

He looked completely stunned. His mouth was gaping open and his hand was extended to knock on the door. “Where are you headed looking like that?”

I looked down at myself and immediately blushed. I had on red fishnet stockings, a too tight mini skirt that barely covered my rear and a tight mid rift shirt and shoes with too high of heels.   I closed my eyes to collect my thoughts. I had always been close to my ex-husband’s brother, but I didn’t particularly like him seeing me dress like this. “Come inside I don’t want my neighbors getting the wrong idea.” He followed me in the house. “Hold on while I call my handler. I was on my way to meet up with him.” As I walked away to call Howard, I looked at Victor to tell him I’d only be a minute. He was looking at me with a bewildered, but admiring stare.

I walked back into the room and Victor was perched on the arm of my couch. “Sorry to intrude on you like this. You are obviously in a hurry to get somewhere.” I sighed. “But I thought you might want to know that Hayden is talking with his lawyers again.”

This day was just going from bad to worse. Not only was I going to be late to meet Howard, but now I was finding out Hayden is trying to sue me for something else. I would never understand it. He got the best end out of the divorce. I’m surprised his lawyers could find a way to make me pay him alimony. “What is he after now?”

Victor cringed. “I hate to tell you this, but.” This was not going to be good, Victor never stalled. “He is trying to get full custody of Lydia. His lawyers should be contacting yours in the next couple of days.”

“Damn it! Why can’t that man just leave us alone? He got everything else from the divorce. Why does he think he can take everything from me that makes me happy?”

I was nearly on the verge of tears. Victor held me in his arms. “I’m sorry Nyssa. I’m not sure why he is being such a jerk. But he is telling his lawyer’s that you are not the best choice for Lydia to live with. He is claiming you spend too much time at your job and Lydia is not given proper discipline, because you are gone most of the time she should be home and you are sending her off to stay with relatives a lot lately.” I started crying into Victor’s shoulder. There was no way I was going to be able to fight this. Especially not right now. “What is going on? Why has Lydia been staying with your brother and your parents?”

He rubbed my back until I calmed down enough to talk. “She has been staying with them because I am starting an intensive undercover mission. I am looking for a man suspected in at least two murders and several more assaults. We have been doing a lot of background research as to his known hangouts and associates so I haven’t been home a lot and I just felt safer if she was not at our house. It’s summer break so I figured it would be best if she was with someone else just in case my cover gets blown. He is a very dangerous man. He has been known to threaten people and might have mob connections. I just don’t want her getting hurt or even the chance of that happening.” Victor just nodded at me. “She has been spending more time with her father too, what is he complaining about?”

“I’m assuming that’s what this get up is all about.” I nodded. “God I hope his lawyers and investigators don’t see you dressed like this. I mean you look fantastic.” He smiled. “But I don’t think it would send the right message at court. He is trying to do it through the court system there in Middlebury since the judge is very conservative.”

“Oh jeez that’s what really what I need right now, some man or woman for that matter telling me that I’m breaking too many gender rules. And somehow that makes me an unfit mother.” My cell phone started ring. The ringing broke my trance, making me notice I was still in Victor’s arms.   I moved away from him to reach into my purse to answer it. “What?” My voice was a bit acerbic. “Damn it Howard I told you I’d be there soon.”

“Geez, Ness relax. I was calling to tell you not to rush, our contact says he will be out of town until later this evening. So I don’t need you at the house for at least another couple hours.”

“Oh.” I felt like a jackass. “I’m sorry; I’m just dealing with family issues again.”

“What is that ass of an ex-husband doing to you now?”

I smiled despite myself. My fellow officers have always been sympathetic with me about my horrible divorce. “I’ll catch you up when I get there. I got to go Victor is still here telling me what is going on.” Howard mumbled something under his breath. “Again I’m sorry and I’ll see you in a couple hours time.”

I hung up the phone and flopped down on my couch. “I’m sorry Victor what were you saying.”

He shrugged. “I’m not quite sure, but god you look really good.” I slapped him on the arm. “Okay seriously though, what does this undercover job involve?”

“Victor, you know I can’t go into the specifics it could jeopardize the mission.”

“I know that. It’s always been that way, but what can you tell me?” He sat down beside me and put his hand on my leg. “I worry about you Ness.”

I put my hand on his. “I know you do Victor.” I looked up at the ceiling and sighed. “I’ll tell you what I can and won’t put you or me in danger.” He patted my leg and smiled. “Let’s see.” I thought over my next words carefully. I was sort of on a gag order, so I could only give the smallest details. “I have been working on this case for a few months.   It started out as a murder of a missing girl. I tracked her last known hangouts to be the streets.” He raised his eyebrow in the manner he always does when he wants more information. “You know I can’t tell you where.” He rolled his eyes. It did make me smile. “Anyway the trail started getting cold and we were about ready to make the case an inactive case when another dead girl shows up. Her manner of death was similar to my missing girl. Fortunately this new girl had been around a while.”

“Been around?”

I rolled my eyes. “Jesus, Vic do I have to spell it out for you? She was a prostitute. She had a record so we could hunt her down. We talked to a few of the girls that she worked with and they all had the same sad story. The girl’s pimp had a nasty temper and had been known to beat his girls. Occasionally some of the girls would go missing for a few weeks at a time and sometimes they never came back. Some of the other girls hoped that they had just found their way out of the life, but most of them knew they were dead somewhere.”

“Okay I get that you need to solve a murder, but I don’t understand why you are dressed like you are going to walk the streets.”

“Well partly because I am.” He started to object. I put my hand up. “First off you aren’t going to tell me that I’m not.   You have no sway over the things I do nor does my EX husband, but I am touched that you care about me.”

“Isn’t this something the vice department should be handling and not investigations?”

“No, they shouldn’t be since the crime is a murder and not the prostitution or drugs. And anyway I’m the only woman at the department that has the experience and the looks to be able to pull off an undercover mission like this.”

“It seems like you already have a suspect. Why can’t you just put surveillance on him and wait for him to do something you can arrest him for?”

“You don’t think we tried that. After we started digging around into the second girl’s death he went underground. He hasn’t popped up in any of his normal hang outs or hideouts. We’ve talked to his girls and they haven’t seen him much, but they have been seeing a messenger of his. Or at least they think it’s him. He has a key to the house they all stay at and he seems to know things that only my suspect should know. But the odd thing according to these girls is he is very businesslike and very organized. He doesn’t seem to use drugs and he never uses the girls’ services. We have gotten very little intelligence on him; he almost has the feel of organized crime.”

“I still don’t understand why you are investigating this. They were whores.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “The girl was a 15 year old runaway. Her mother misses her.” He hung his head down. “Lydia is just a little younger than her. I have to help that mother. The child ran away during a divorce with some boy and I guess she just didn’t feel like she could go back home. I don’t even know what I’d do.”

“Alright I understand your motivation a little better.” He put his arm around my shoulder and squeezed me. “Can you tell me anything else?”

“Not that wouldn’t jeopardize my cover. “

He nodded. “Where will you be staying?”

“A little bit here, at the department and hopefully at the house ran by the pimp.”

“Be careful. And watch your back for Hayden’s investigators. If I were you I’d put on a long coat before you leave the house again if you are wearing that out. And don’t forget to fix your makeup.” He leaned in and kissed me on the head. “Call me occasionally while you are on this assignment. I don’t want you to end up dead in the gutter like those girls.”

I nodded and showed him the door. I fixed my makeup and decided to listen to Vic and grabbed my light weight thigh length coat. As I walked out the door I noticed a man parked across the street with a camera. I walked over to the car and pulled my badge out of my pocket and tapped it on the window. “Excuse me sir, but can you tell me what you are doing here?”

“Ms. Saxton?”

“Detective Saxton.”

He handed me a card. “I’m Michael Johnson PI. I work for your ex-husband Hayden Saxton.”

“That’s nice sir, but you need to move along. You really don’t want me calling a patrolman out here to file some invasion of privacy or harassment charges. Because I know that camera of yours probably has some pictures on it that would boarder invasion of privacy.”

“Yes ma’am. Before I leave do you mind if I ask you some questions for my investigation?”

“Sure if you are quick about it.   I’m late to a meeting with my lieutenant.”

“Do you always dress in that manner?”

“Excuse me?”

“I saw you earlier on the porch with my client’s brother.”

“No I do not dress this way typically. I am working a high profile case right now. And I advise you not to follow me or we will arrest you for obstructing justice.   Now if you don’t mind leaving my neighborhood.” I got into my unmarked police car, as I was leaving I called Captain Walter and advised him of the PI and asked him to send someone over in a bit to make sure he left.

Chapter 2

I met Howard at the station to leave my car and went with him to the stakeout apartment on the street we were working in some half dead vehicle. “So Ness, what’s going on with Hayden this time?”

“Other than he’s the biggest ass I know?” He laughed. “He is trying to get full custody of Lydia.”

“Why would he even try to do that? He doesn’t even pay child support now as it is. And what judge in his right mind would even give it to him?”

“Well I’ve decided the only reason he is doing this is because I’m happy without him in my life. And he’s using the grounds that I’m putting Lydia in danger with my job and I have lack of parental supervision since I work strange hours.”

“Oh geez, that’s low using your job against you. Good thinking on your part of sending her to Greece for the summer. It sounds like it’s going to work out perfect. She won’t have to know he is jerking you around and she will be safe there, just in case this gets ugly.” He reached over and patted me on the shoulder. “Don’t worry he won’t go through with it or if he does he won’t win. You are three times the parent he is.”

“Thanks. Now give me a brief on this mission.   Enough about my family problems, I need to get my head in the game.”

“That’s what I love about working undercover with you. You are always straight to the point and no playing around. We are almost at the house so we will wait until we get there. The guys have stocked the closet with clothing.” I rolled my eyes. “Yeah you’ll LOVE it.” He was being sarcastic. “They took one of our informants shopping for clothing for you.”

“Great. Now all their fantasies can come to life.”

He started laughing. “You have no idea how true that statement is. This is the first stakeout mission I have ever had that I actually had to turn people away from. Most of the times I can’t get enough help, this time I got more than I needed.” I shook my head. “But no worries, there are some blue jeans and tea shirts in there too. I picked up the other items I thought you would want that they didn’t think about getting.”

I leaned across the car and gave him a kiss on the check. “Thanks. I’m a little nervous about this. I mean how am I going to play a convincing prostitute if I refuse anyone that walks up to me?”

He patted my leg. “You’ll do fine. We have a contingency worked out for that. As I said I’d brief you went we get to the house.”

I was pondering all the information I found out today and what I should do it. “How long of a drive is it?”

“It will probably take us about an hour or so with this traffic.”

“Alright I’m going to call my lawyer and let him know to expect papers and that they will need to do some damage control.”

“Give him my number to contact you by, because once you go undercover your cell phone is mine.”

I nodded and dialed the number. I found it sad that I knew my attorney’s number by heart. “Hello Margret. Nyssa Saxton”

“Detective, what can I do for you today?”

“Well, I got a visit from Victor today.” It was normally a sign that papers of some sort were going to be delivered whenever Victor showed up.

“Oh no, what is going on now?”

“Apparently, Hayden is working on filing for sole custody of Lydia.”

“Oh geez that man will never quit. I’m still trying to figure out what happened during the divorce. But on the Brightside Lydia is now old enough to choose where she wants to stay.”

“True, but I don’t think it will really matter. He is claiming my job interferes with my capabilities of being a good parent. He is claiming our daughter has a lack of parental supervision. He will probably try to prove that with the way she dresses.”

“How is she dressing?”

“She’s going through a Goth phase. I let her and buy her the clothing.”

“According to Victor, Hayden claims that since I’m working late hours I don’t get to spend enough time with her.”

“Oh shit this sound like it’s going to be another knock down drag out fight. Are you spending time with your daughter?”

“Yes we spend a lot of time together. Right now she is in Greece with my grandmother and aunt. He will probably use that against me.   I already know he will use the fact that I’m going undercover for the next month against me.”

“Oh you are going undercover again? When do you expect to be done?”

“Well I am hoping it will only take a few weeks, but it could be a little while. We aren’t one hundred percent sure; it depends on how this thing goes. If you need to contact me call Howard. He is my handler for this.”

“Oh now that seems interesting.”

I heard the smile in her voice. I laughed a bit. “Yeah. Oh one more thing Hayden has hired a private investigator to watch me.   I might need a restraining order.”

“Okay I’ll wait for the papers and start looking in to some of your cases. I’ll call Howard later to see what kind of information I can get out of him about your cases so I know what I’m looking at. Do you have any idea how long this PI has been following you around?”

“Not a clue. Victor warned me about him. He seems a nice enough fellow, but he was waiting outside my house when I was leaving. I have another call on the line. I’ll touch base with you at a later date. If you haven’t heard anything from me in a couple days call Howard he might know something.” I switched calls. “Hello.”

“Ness, it’s Walter. I wanted to let you know your PI friend has left the area.”

“Thanks a lot. I figured he would, but you never know.”

“Oh it was probably good you did call us. We had to escort him off your lawn.”

“Damn it.”

“Your ex-husband again?”

“Of course, who else would want to know what I am doing?”

“Well I’ll have the guys do some extra patrols around your house while you’re on this assignment. You be careful out there and watch your back.”

“Thanks.” I hung up and looked over at Howard. “Walter.”

He nodded his head. “What’s this about a PI following you around? Is he going to fuck up my mission?”

“I don’t know. I warned him off following me by threating to arrest him for interring in an official investigation. Hopefully he got the hint.”

“Okay I’ll have the boys keep an eye out for him. What did you say his name was?”

“Michael Johnson.”

His forehead was creased the way it does when he is thinking. “Do I need to worry about him talking to my wife?”

I took a deep breath. It was a sore spot with me. I knew he would never tell his wife about us. “I don’t think so, but I don’t know for sure how long he has been following me.”

We pulled into the safe house. “You ready?” I nodded. “Well let’s go meet the team.”

He looked around to make sure no one was watching then he went around to the back door. I got out of the car and walked down the street a little ways before doubling back. I was keeping an eye out for any extra attention coming my way and that PI. I walked in to the house mostly unobserved.

Howard was standing in the living room talking to the team. “Nyssa, you have met Peterson, Richards and Hopkins.” I nodded. “Now that you are here I can start with the briefing. Nyssa from here on out we will only refer to you as Violet. So we don’t blow your cover. Boys we need to try to keep eyes and ears on her at all times. I don’t want this getting out of hand.”

Richards, I think his first name was Timothy, interrupted. “Why don’t we wire her, that way we can hear her and she can hear us?”

Howard looked at me. “Ness, damn it, Violet take your jacket off.” I slid my jacket off and sat it on the back of the chair I was standing near. All four men just stared at me, until Howard broke the silence. “Richards, where are you gonna put a wire on that?”

Richards still hadn’t managed to pulls his eyes off me. “Good point boss. Good point.”

“Ness, if you manage to gain access to Mickey’s house I need you to bug it.” I nodded. He continued on through the rest of the briefing. Everyone asking questions he made sure we all had it. “Any further questions?” I looked up at him. “Yeah Ness.”

“It’s Violet. You need to get used to that unless you plan on blowing my cover.” He smiled. “I know it’s hard on you since we have worked together for a while.”

“Okay Violet.”

“I got one problem. What are we doing about the johns?”

“We got that covered. We have a few loaners from a neighboring district to come by and solicit you. So you will look like you have business, but not too much to be stealing from the other girls. They will all use a code word.”

“What am I to do about the real solicitors? I can’t very well agree to them and I also can’t arrest them.”

“Tell them you are busy and refer them to one of the other girls. Wing it you are always good about that. We will be watching you from upstairs.”

“Alright, off to work.”

I went outside and walked down the street a little ways away from the house, but close enough that I could take my ‘johns’ to it. I stood across the street from the larger group of girls. I decided I didn’t want to get to close, because they might see me as competition. I stood on the opposite corner from the group I wanted to get in with. I wasn’t out there for more than two hours when a man I had never seen approached me. I was a little worried I was going to have to come up with an excuse as why I couldn’t service him. Then he used the code phrase. I walked him back to the house.

We walked into the house and he walked into the kitchen and got a coke and sat on the couch. “Wow, you are going to have a hard time out there.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Cause you look fantastic, especially in comparison to some of those women. You are going to have to be fighting them off with a stick. How have you worked that out?”

“Thank you I guess. That’s a glitch we haven’t quite worked out yet.”

“I think you should have a pimp. He can hustle the real guys off if you can’t get rid of them yourself.”

“The only problem with that is I’m trying to get in with a pimp.”

“Oh well I still think you should have back up protection out here. Some of these guys aren’t going to take no for an answer.”

“Thanks for your concern. I’m sure Lt. Jenson has it covered.”

We sat around and continued our small talk for a bit longer then he left the apartment and I returned to my spot. The rest of the night continued in that fashion until I noticed the number of girls getting less and less on the streets and I decided to call it a night. I walked back into the apartment and bypassed the boys and went straight to the shower. I had to get the filth off me.

I walked out of the bathroom with a towel around me and ran into Howard. He reached out and grabbed my arm to keep me from falling down, but in his efforts to keep me upright he made my towel fall off. I scrambled to pick it back up, but not before Peterson saw me.   Howard instinctively pushed me behind him so Peterson could not see me. Peterson’s face turned bright red and he instantly turned around and apologized.

“Howard handed me the towel with his back still turned. I’m sorry Ness. I’ll have one of the guys go pick you up a bathrobe tonight.”

I knew I was beat red. My face was on fire. “Thanks.”

I continued walking into my designated room. I got dressed and laid down on the bed. I was starting to wonder if going undercover was a bad idea. Especially when I put it in respect to my personal life, my daughter was overseas, my ex-husband was trying to run me through the mud again and I was working this assignment with my boss whom I happened to be sleeping with. I was starting to feel sorry for myself. I snuggled into the pillow and could feel the tears welling up. I heard my door open. I quickly wiped my eyes and looked up to see Timothy Richards in poking his head in. “Nyssa?” I looked up. “Did I come at a bad time?” I had never worked with him and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I sat up and ran the back of my hand over my eyes again. “No you are fine. And please call me Ness or my cover name.”

He smiled. “Do you mind if I come in.”

“Sure.” I moved over on the bed so he could sit down. “What can I do for you?”

“A couple things actually.” He looked down at his hands. “First I want to apologize for staring at you earlier today.” I laughed. He blushed. “It’s just look. Well you looked good.”

I patted him on the leg. “It’s alright. I wouldn’t expect anything else.”

“Secondly it’s about the mission. I was wondering if there is any way we could put a mic on you. I know Howard said it was impossible, but I’m not sure. I’ve got some really small wireless ones. I have some that we could put on a hairpin or on the inside of shirt.” He looked me straight in the eyes and placed his hand on my knee. “I just want to make sure you are safe. This guy is dangerous if you find him and this new guy we have no idea who he is. We can’t even find a picture of him anywhere.”

“Well show me what you have.”

“I’ll be right back.”

He had no sooner left and there was another knock on my door. “Yes?”

Howard poked his head in. “You doing alright?”

“Yeah I’m fine. Why do you ask?”

“Well earlier.” He looked down at the floor. “God, I’m so sorry I embarrassed you. I should have been more careful.”

“It’s okay. Something like that was bound to happen. I just didn’t expect it to happen on day one.” I smiled. “Anyway I should have been watching where I was going.”

“You holding up alright?” I nodded. “I only ask cause I can tell you have been crying.” He rubbed his ran his thumb under my eyes triggering another onslaught of tears. He pulled me in close and started running his hands through my hair. “It will be okay. Hayden is just being an ass. He’s just trying to hurt you. After he has felt you have had enough embarrassment he will drop the suit.”

I hope you are right. I can’t even imagine what I would do without her. She means the world to me.”

He leaned down and gave me a passionate kiss and then laid my head against his chest and held me. “I know she is. You are so great with her and you give her the best you can.” I wanted to ask him what he meant by that, but I decided to let it go.   “I hate seeing you like this.   You mean a lot to me.”

I heard a knock and then door crack open and then was closed immediately. I jerked my head off his chest. No one needed to know about our affair.  “Who was that? Great, one more thing to worry about.”

“Relax. It was just Richards and it’s not like he could have seen anything anyway.” He looked me in the eyes. “What was he doing in here earlier?”

I gave him a small smile. “Jealous is not becoming on you.” He gave me a stern and serious look. “He wanted to try to mic me.”

“God he is still on that. There is no way we can pull that off. It is going to get found. You never know when you will be able to gain entrance to that house. I don’t want some as careless as a wire to be found when you go in there. They are dangerous.”

“He just wants to help. He just wants to keep me safe.”

He rolled his eyes. “It’s stupid things like a mic are going to blow your cover Ness. I don’t want to take any extra chances. It’s bad enough that we are this close. I don’t want you wearing one of those. Got it?”

“Yeah.” I was a little concerned with him not wanting me wired. I don’t know why we couldn’t just give it a try. I tried to smile at him. “Now get out of here I need to call Lydia.”

He started to walk away but turned around just as he reached the door. “Here you might want this.” As he threw my cell phone at me. “I don’t want you using the house phone. Just in case some ne starts snooping around Violet’s background.”

After he left I gave Lydia a call to see how she was doing with my aunt and grandmother in Greece. She was having tons of fun and was glad I had convinced her to go. She had even met a boy she liked. She was so thankful that I taught her how to speak Greek. She was going on and on about all the things her and Ya Ya were doing. I spoke with Ya Ya a bit and she asked how work was going and I let her know about what Hayden was trying to pull. She told me not to worry that it would all work out in the end.

I had crawled into bed and was almost asleep when there was a knock on the door. I had assumed everyone was in bed. The house had been quiet for a little while. I got up to answer the door. I was hoping it wasn’t Howard. There was only one thing he would want at this time and I wasn’t in the mood to humor him. I was still a little pissed about him telling me he cared a lot for me, but yet he refused to tell his wife. I was working myself up to be mad, but when I opened the door I was surprised. “Timothy? What are you doing here.”

He turned and looked in towards the kitchen where there was a noise. He pushed his way into my room. “Sorry to intrude on you Vi.” I smiled that he remembered not to call me by my first name. He whispered. “I wanted to talk to you about the mic.” I nodded. “I came back earlier, but you were.” He paused. “Talking with Lt. Jenson.” I cringed only slightly and I hoped he hadn’t caught it, but of course my hope was in vain. “You shouldn’t get messed up with him. He’s not good for you.”

I was starting to get mad. “Timothy.   Please let that topic drop. I’ve had a bad day already I don’t need it exacerbated.”

“Sorry. I’m just a little pissed at him cause he won’t hear me out on this mic thing. It would make you a lot safer out there.   I really don’t want you getting hurt. Some of those johns out there are going to get pissed when you tell them no and I’d like us to be able to respond quickly to aid you. There are some blind spots out there on the street.”

“Why didn’t this come up in the meeting after the shift was over?”

“Howard didn’t want to spook you. He said it was best you didn’t know.” I wrinkled my nose. “I know I feel the same way. But he’s a Lieutenant and I’m a lowly Sergeant.   Sorry about the whispering, but someone is awake and Jensen has already laid into me about discussing it with you after he had already dismissed the idea early today.”

“Fuck him. Show me what you got. I don’t want some scumbag getting it in his head he’s going to have his way with me.”

We went over the microphones he had and the range they went and where the dead spaces in sight were out on the street so I could try to avoid them as much as possible. Then we talked about where the mics could be placed. It was decided that I would wear that could attach to the inside of my shirt that would attach to my bra strap and it if I didn’t wear one then it could be attached to the waist band of my skirt or pants, but that was last resort since it would be harder to hear me. We came up with a code word and I also let him know what the code phrases were for our guys so he would know which men were friendly and which were scum. We discussed the mission for two hours.

As he was walking out. “Vi?”

“Were you crying when I came in earlier?”

I looked down at the floor. I hated when people I didn’t know well caught me at a weak moment. “Yeah.”

“Are you okay now?” I nodded. “Do you mind if I ask why?”

“My ex-husband is getting ready to sue me for custody.”

“Oh. I heard you had a rough divorce to begin with.”

“You only know the half of it.”

“How old is your child?”

“She’s fourteen.” He gave me a puzzled look. “I already know what you are going to say. Yes she could decide on her own, but he going on the grounds that I am never home and can’t give proper supervision since I work all the time and I do these undercover missions. He knows all of this because this was how it was when we were married. And also the cause of his numerous affairs, so he claims.” He started to laugh. “Sorry that was way too much information about my personal life.” By this time we had stopped whispering. If anyone came by my room we could claim since we were both awake we could keep each other company. He was laugh full heartedly by now. “What is so funny?”

“Well first off I was just going to say you don’t look old enough to have a daughter that old. And secondly and I know you won’t find this as funny as I do, but the fact that you still seemed a bit pissed about your husband having an affair, but yet you are having one with Jensen.” I gave him a dirty look. “See I told you it you wouldn’t find it funny.”

“Actually it is kind of funny. I made some crappy decisions. Other than me just telling you how did you know?”

We went back to whispering. “While a few things actually. There were rumors going around the precinct that he had to be seeing someone. He is only that nice when he has another affair. By the way if you didn’t know, you aren’t the first and you won’t be the last. He has had four affairs since I’ve been at the precinct and I haven’t been there more than six years.” That was news to me and I didn’t much like it. He must have noticed the look on my face. “Sorry to upset you.” I shook it off and asked him to continue. “Anyway that combined with the way he treated you went you got here, the whole shower incident.” I blushed. “Yeah Peterson was bragging about seeing you naked.” I started laughing again. “Geez who could blame him. You are smoking.” He was sitting close to me so I smacked him on the shoulder. “Then to top it all off I saw the two of you together this evening, you in his arms and him stroking your hair.”

“Damn it. I already hear the demotion.”

He smiled. “Gosh if I wasn’t such a nice guy I’d have great blackmail.” He patted me on the back. “Your secret is safe with me.” Then he gave me an impish grin. “Well if you wear that mic we talked about.”

I slugged him in the arm. “I was going to wear it anyway. Howard can kiss my ass about that and if he even thinks about throwing a fit and trying to reprimand me for not following orders I have my own blackmail.   Fuck it if it screws me over.”

He laughed. “Now that’s the spirit! A nice woman like you shouldn’t be with a scumbag like him anyway. You get yourself some sleep. I’ll see you in the morning.”
