Becoming a Writer, The Writer

Being proud of who you are

Last week during my standard outdoor lunch break, I posted a quick message on Instagram saying “be proud of who you are and let it come out in everything you do.” Little did I realize some would consider it inspiring.

As you know by now, I spend a lot of my lunch breaks outside relaxing, reading, or doing a bit of introspection.  That day happened to be an introspection kind of day.  I was going through the three note books I carry with me, on a near daily basis, and was looking at all the outlandish and somewhat large in scope creative and business ideas that I had drafted.  My thought was “Who do I think I am believing I can achieve these lofty goals?”  The ideas I had on paper were ideas that people who make an impact on people come up with, not just some office worker and part-time writer.

But as I sat there going over my plans, and some of them are very detailed plans, I thought…why can’t I do these things?  After all, I had come up with the ideas and started building plans, why couldn’t I follow through on them?  I got to realizing, the person I truly am is that creative, entrepreneurial person that wrote those plans.  I came to acknowledge that I am creative and entrepreneurial when I’m relaxed and following the path that makes me happy.  So, I have started doing research to figure out how to take those plans and drafts and turn them into reality.

This realization made me aware of how easily we lose ourselves in expectations of others and even what we think we should be.  Once we shed those expectations we can become who we are and be more fulfilled in this life.  So just remember, be proud of who you are and let your true nature come out in everything you do.

    1. Thanks, George. It just amazes me the difference mood makes in our motivations. I had been feeling rather overwhelmed, rightfully so, the past few weeks with all the upcoming changes coming into my life. But sometimes we just have to step back away from everything and realize that we are all so much more capable than we give ourselves credit for. I always think back to the saying… if there is a will there is a way. Actually, I wear a bracelet that has inscribed on the beads Where you place your will, There you will achieve as a reminder that I just have to work towards my goals and I will achieve them.

  1. Our self-perception can be incredibly limiting, and when we feel the expectations from others it can add to it. I am really intrigued by your notebook ideas! Can’t wait to see the ones that go ahead xx

    1. Thanks Zee! It’s all about perception, I was feeling way overwhelmed last week and now I’m starting to get a handle on all the stressors and taking them one at a time. I’m sure once I finish this time suck of a class I am in right now (4 weeks left!), those ideas in the notebook will expand and some will become common knowledge and I’m nearly certain those ideas will propagate into new ideas 🙂

  2. I found this post through GoodReads, wondering how I missed it in the notices that come through in my email inbox. Did I opt to stop receiving your posts? That is highly unlikely. I got here though and after reading it, I am questioning how strong my motivation is with what I want to do during the course of a day. This spring has been one failure after another, with let-downs in between. I can only how that the summer months will be better suited for me.

    1. How strange! Maybe it had something to do with the way I posted. I did start the post a few days prior to actually posting it. Either way, I’m glad you found the post 🙂

I’ve been having some interesting ebb and flow with motivation lately – I have a feeling it is directly related to my energy levels, which are doing the exact same thing. I have found that my creativity is starting to return and I’m anxiously awaiting having a little extra time to work on the next Malcolm Stone book. I’m sure you will get into a rhythm with your writing, just don’t be too hard on yourself. Perhaps the “failures” are just opportunities to focus your energy somewhere else or on a different project. Just be free to flow with where your mind takes you, even if it’s away from something you thought you needed to do.

      1. I have a feeling a big part of it was warm weather laziness. This week I have been doing battle with a cold. Today is the first day in two weeks that I have felt like working on a project. I guess I could blame being run down as an excuse but only for these past two weeks.
